This is to inform that the training on Alcohol and Drug Abuse for 100 students who registered in the counselling office and had cleared their fee will be held on Saturday 3rd December from 8:00am to 5:30pm. The same students will be notified through sms.

The University has improved the way admission documents are received by first years. It has launched a sub domain website where the first years can easily download their documents upon providing their valid index numbers. All learning institutions are using this same technique. Below are instructions to be followed.

• Log on to http://firstyears.egerton.ac.ke 
• Enter your index number and then download the documents.
• Its simple as that. Congratulations!

Changes in the accommodation and notices ahead University reopening.

Greetings comrade, we hope you are doing well. Please NOTE the following changes in halls and accommodation departments:

• Four thousand, five hundred (4500)  beds spaces will be preserved  for the /16(incoming first years)

• Tatton - Mombasa hostels will be left only for the engineering students

• Riverview hostels will be preserved for medicine students. The following blocks are also preserved for medicine students to be part of Riverview: River-side block A and Busia block in Buruburu hostels will also be preserved for medicine students,

•  Riverside block B will be preserved only for the international students (foreign students) as the university has increased their intake.

So on 16th next month, August, you are advised not to waste time trying to book these preserved rooms. Strictly book the rooms left. Every student has a right to book a room.

Also avoid rumors that finalists will not to be allowed to book rooms.

Lastly, if you have a relative or a friend who is to pick his/her letter of offer, please remind of the operating hours of the admissions office i.e from 8.30 to 4pm on weekdays.

Apply for removal of VAT Tax obligation before submitting the Nil Tax Returns.

Earlier on, we posted a link to video demonstrating how to fill Nil Tax Returns. Unfortunately, the process will not be successful if your KRA PIN was registered with VAT tax compliance. This means your account/PIN is intertwined with the VAT tax which you are not even paying!

HOW DO I KNOW IF ITAX IS ENABLED ON MY KRA ACCOUNT?

(You do not need to visit a cyber cafe to do this! So long as you have a laptop or a good Phone – I am taking of Android smartphones and iPhones. Then make sure you have Google Chrome browser installed or a native browser, android = browser, iPhone = safari. On laptops, use any installed browser)

I hope some of you are stuck but I will my best to help you. This process is only helpful to those with VAT tax enabled on their account. If you do not know whether VAT is enabled on your account, there are two options:

1. Visit a nearest Huduma centre iTax offices and ask the host attenders to query your account. You must go there with your original ID card (If you prefer this, check option 7 below, next paragraph). Personally I do not advocate for this step because of the traveling involved.
2. Log into to the iTax website. This is the process I'm explaining on the following paragraph. It involves the procedure most of you are not stuck on.

HOW TO KNOW IF VAT IS ENABLED ON YOUR ACCOUNT USING A COMPUTER OR PHONE.

(For the purposes of this tutorial, I am demonstrating via a smartphone since the iTax website has the same interface on both devices.- images will be included on this post by tomorrow)

1. Log in to the iTax website by visiting https://itax.kra.go.ke. (This will open on open on another page so stick on this page).
2. At top left corner, below the Kenya Revenue authority logo, there is a text field prompting you to Enter your KRA PIN and click continue. (If you have forgotten it, visit Huduma Centre KRA offices).
3. Since this is your first time, you will receive an error message telling “you have not updated your details on iTax”. Just click on the hand like image to continue.
4. You will be then directed to another page where you will be required to enter your KRA PIN again, ID No, date of birth in dd/mm/yyy format e.g 1/12/1990 and a simple math security check. Then press submit/go/next.
5. On this page(A Basic_information tab), don't fill anything since KRA has all of your details. Just scroll down and click on next.
6. (B Obligation details)Be keen here since this is where your fate lies. If VAT tax is checked, this means VAT was enabled during your PIN registration. If not, fill NONE on your employers details and continue with the process and submit them.
7. If VAT was checked, please make photocopies of your ID, University letter of offer and any document supporting that you are a student or not employed.
8. Visit your nearest Huduma Centre with the above documents and ask where KRA offices are. Channel your query to the attendants that you want VAT tax to be removed on your account. You will then be given a form to fill.

Varsity students with KRA PINS to be penalised TAX returns if they don't fill iTax forms

If you know you have KRA Pin Please take your time to read this because if not, don't be surprised the money you are going to pay to the Government of Kenya as fines and penalties because of your ignorance.

It has come to our attention that, Kenya Revenue Authority Has not educated Kenyans about the personal Identification Number (PIN) which they require every Kenya who is above 18 years to have.

Students Receiving HELB LOANS I know most of you applied for KRA PINS in cyber Cafes, THE Most SENSITIVE PART Immediately you get KRA PIN, there is Something called TAX RETURNS Which every Kenyan with KRA PIN is supposed to submit at KRA website. It does not matter weather you are working or not.This TAX Returns are submitted according to the amount of money one earns per year.

RECOMMENDATIONS
If you have KRA PIN :
1. You need to register with ITAX
at https://itax.kra.go.ke/

2. Go to tax returns form and fill NIL Returns or 0 returns
Register at KRA Itax page and fill the online forms to avoid penalties

PENALTIES
Assuming you got your PIN in the year 2012 you owe KRA kshs 3600/= a fine of 600 and a penalty of kshs 1000/= per year.

To avoid accumulating of this Money, please register Now At ITAX and submit NIL Returns

The ICT department speeds up internet speeds at all University networks

From yesterday 23rd Marc 2016, comrades have been enjoying improved internet speeds. This is after the ICT department configured the university networks to eliminate the downtime and outages that were being experienced.

You can can now stream high quality videos and download files with ease. Those having trouble connecting to the internet should make sure they have configured the proxies WELL or visit the ICT OR the computer science students for help.

HELB second disbursement dates

"Comrades MUST enjoy " - is the first commandment of comradeship. But what most people don't know is that it was amended in conjunction with HELB constitution act. Therefore, the complete clause is:. Comrades MUST enjoy HELB money! 

The second semester will start next month January 2016 (as tweeted earlier) and most of the students are eagerly waiting for the money.  Either to squander, pay bills or pay fees arrears. Due to pressure from most students, we contacted HELB and they were able to answer your queries.

Via Twitter, HELB said the second
disbursement will be issued in early January promptly before opening dates for all government sponsored (jab) and SSP (self sponsored students). Also first year's will be disbursed on the same month.

LAUNCH OF YOUTH AND TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Egerton University’s Institute of Women, Gender & Development Studies (IWGDS) is launching a certificate course in Youth and Transformational Leadership Development Program (YOTLED) during its 15th Gender Awareness Day on 17th October 2015 at 9.00 a.m.

The launch of the programme is part of IWGDS response to the need for knowledge, skills and competencies in Leadership and Management. It is aimed at equipping students and County youth with acumens and competencies needed to identify and implement innovative ideas and strategies that are required for organizational and societal transformation.

The course targets university undergraduate and postgraduate students, youth from across counties, civil society organizations, youth clubs, youth political aspirants, school leavers among others.

Thematic Areas of Training include:

SUICIDE? Lake Elementaita residents looses one of its own.

Today Tuesday 10th November 2015, Lake Elementaita residents sleep was brought to a stand still after an attempted suicide by Mr Bonface Mwanzia.

The late Mr Bonface Mwanzia was a second year student pursuing a degree in Economics and Statistics. He was a stroke 12 (/12) who had deferred his course due to drug addiction and he just resumed his studies this academic year, 2015/2016.  It is rumored that he was at a rehabilitation center during his deferment.

Room mates of the deceased narrated how he frequently asked them strange questions about death:

Mtu akitaka kukufufa anafanyaje?

Mtu akikufa anaiskiaje? 

Ukitaka ku-defer unafanyaje?

... 

They were shocked to find out that lad who was shouting yesternight painfully was their roommate. He is believed to have jumped from Lake Elementaita rooftop after a meditation(drug use). 

The hostel residents at first thought he was a drunkard and some even wanted to  beat him. But when they realised he was injured(He had broken one leg), they again suspected he was a thief who may have fallen while trying to maneuver the windows.

There was no sign high impact fall since the scene had small blood spot. He was unconscious and he couldn't recognise his names or room and therefore helping him was difficult.

He was then rushed him to Nakuru hospital where he passed away. Investigation is still going on and we are still waiting for an official statement from the security department.

Mid-Semester break and closure of Registration.

This is to inform teaching staff and students that Mid-Semester break for Semester I of 2015/2016 academic year has been scheduled to start from Saturday 17th October to Tuesday 20th October 2015. Lectures will resume at 8.00 a.m. on Wednesday October 2015.

Students are free to travel out of the university during the the intermission. Those who choose not to travel are allowed to stay but should register with the Dean of Students office to be scheduled for various extra-curricular activities during the intermission.

Students who have not cleared fees should do so during this period. Registration portals will be closed promptly on Friday 23rd October 2015.

Teaching staff are encouraged to complete marking of CATs, assignments and practicals during this academic break.

S.U.E.U campaigns and elections are here again!!

S.U.E.U campaigns and elections are here again!! A period described by many as the very important and thrilling event in the university calender rivaled only by end semester exams and graduation.

Aspirants are busy buying both cheap and expensive suits, posing all manner of smiles infront of cameras for posters and banners, planning out strategies ( watsapp grps, twitter handles e.t.c ), and identifying with strongholds all in effort to win the elections.

The greatest concern  here, is the student and his or her interests, rights, freedom and privileges, knowledge and information that he is entitled to within the Egerton community and the country at large.

It is the students' call to ensure he/she participates and  owns a student body that  advocates for the above.

Its up to the electorate student to promote the activities of the union, to own its leadership, to uphold its constitution and values because the union and the university belongs to them. Last elections,  significant number of students shown their zeal and power at the ballot in major posts.. but then again failed in achieving our desires by sending some of our top leaders home through strike!

The bulk stops with the electorate students... own the union,  , protect, promote and take pride in it. Its belongs to you! 

All the while, as a SCHOLAR seek to be ~ socially, politically and econimically empowered ~ that is the bottom line!
