About TukoWorks
According to a UNDP discussion paper from January 2013 themed; “Kenya’s Youth Employment Challenge” out of the 80 percent of Kenya’s 2.3 million unemployed comprises of young people between 15 and 34 years of age. About 19 percent of the young unemployed are between 15 and 19 years of age; 30 percent are aged between 20 and 24 years; 21 percent are aged between 25 and 29; and 9 percent are aged between 30 and 34 years.

Further, a 2013 Economic Review on Kenya concluded that the labor market recorded 659,400 new jobs in 2012, representing an increase of 5.5 percent. In total, 68,000 new jobs were created in the modern sector in 2012, compared to 74,200 in 2011.

Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system is perceived as being extremely theoretical and hardly prepares the young people for the job market upon leaving university, a tertiary college and it is worse for school drop outs since they lack necessary skills and knowledge to start their own enterprises.

The large numbers of youth unemployment and the low numbers of new jobs created in Kenya’s modern sector show the big gap that needs to be bridged by running programs that promote youth entrepreneurship and employability.

TukoWorks is national one-stop shop on Employability and Entrepreneurship that seeks to bridge the gap for job seekers, aspiring entrepreneurs and school leavers by providing a network of accessible opportunities from various openings as well as necessary training on how to start ones enterprise. We plan to achieve this by up-skilling young people to meet the requirements that employers are looking for new hires as well as provide a start-up knowledge kit for those who want to be entrepreneurs to enable them start their own business.

The TukoWorks website will provide free resources, training and career guidance services to young Kenya’s. In addition, the program is designed to be a platform where young people can build networks and connect to develop their career and young budding enterprises.
