Why Women are More Likely to Develop Depression

As much as twice as many women are diagnosed with depression than men. Being a woman in the late 20′s is therefore considered a risk factor for depression though health experts are not sure why women are more likely to develop depression than men.

Many health experts also believe that prevalence of depression among women may be also due to the fact that they are more likely to seek professional help for their problems than men.

Despite the fact that depression is an illness just like high blood pressure and that it can be successfully treated male depression often goes undiagnosed. Many men consider discussing their emotions and feelings with other people very unmanly and perceive it as sign of weakness. For that reason they often mask the symptoms of depression and refuse to seek professional help due to fear from stigmatization.

Though the statistical data does not show the whole picture most researchers agree that women are at greater risk of developing depression than men. This may be related emotional and mood changes due to hormonal fluctuations during menstrual cycles, pregnancy and menopause though hormonal changes alone do not cause depression.
