Egerton
University is a fully-fledged public University established under the
University Act (2012) through the award of the Egerton University
Charter (2013). It is the oldest institution of higher learning in Kenya
and was founded as a Farm School in 1939 by Lord Maurice Egerton of
Tatton, a British national who settled in Kenya in the 1920s.
The University has three (3) Campuses and one Campus College. The
main Campus is based at Njoro and currently has nine (9) Faculties and
fifty one (51) academic departments offering a wide range of programmes
at diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. All of them are open to both Government sponsored and Self-sponsored Students. In
the last ten (10) years the University enrolment has tremendously
increased from a student population of approximately four thousand
(4,000) to twenty five thousand (25,000) students in the academic year
2014/15.

In
this regard, the University Council invites applications from suitably
qualified and experienced persons with excellent credentials to provide
strategic and visionary leadership to the institution in the position of
Vice-Chancellor. The successful applicant is expected to bring about
transformational change in the University by taking the lead in spurring
robust infrastructural development, ensuring financial stability and
growth, expansion of innovative and relevant academic and research
programmes, an enhanced Student population, and result oriented staff
management.
Requirements:
For appointment to the position of the Vice-Chancellor, a person shall:
(i) Be a full professor and holder of an earned Doctorate degree or equivalent qualification from a University recognized in Kenya;
(ii) Have thorough knowledge in the structural, legislative and regulatory framework for administering University Education in Kenya;
(iii) Have
at least ten (10) years of academic and research experience at senior
level and possess demonstrated leadership in an academic and/or research
institution having served substantively with demonstrable results
at least in the position of a Dean/Director, Principal of Constituent
University College or as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of a University. Further
the individual should demonstrate management capacity including
knowledge of public financial management and strategic people
management.
(iv) Be
an accomplished scholar with proven track record in formulating and
managing academic programmes and supervising and mentoring Master’s and
Ph.D. Students;
(v) Have a proven track record of research and publications in peer reviewed journals, monographs and books;
(vi) Have demonstrable experience in networking, fundraising and resource mobilization;
(vii) Have a demonstrable experience in transformative and strategic leadership; and
(viii) Must
have high ethical standards, integrity, accountability,
professionalism, teamwork and stewardship, and comply with the
requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
ADMISSION LETTERS for first years 2015/2016
Core Competencies:
The following core competencies and skills will be required for the position of the Vice-Chancellor:
(i) Ability
to portray and uphold positive national image and work in a
multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity to and
respect for diversity.
(ii) Being a visionary and result oriented individual.
(iii) Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
(iv) Capacity to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
(v) Firm, fair and transparent management style.
Duties and Responsibilities:
As per the Charter and Statutes of the Egerton University, the Vice-Chancellor:
(i) Shall
be the academic and administrative Head of the University and as such
shall be responsible to the Council for maintaining and promoting the
academic image as well as maintaining and promoting the efficiency and
good order of the University.
(ii) Shall be a member of all committees appointed by Council or Senate unless otherwise expressly provided.
(iii) Shall be the Secretary to the Council and an ex officio member of the Council.
(iv) Shall be the Accounting Officer of the University.
(v) Shall
be responsible for Policy Matters, Planning, Coordination, Public
Relations, Fund Raising and General Development of the University.
(vi) Shall be:
(a) Chairman of Senate.
(b) Chairman of Associate Professorial Appointments.
(c) Chairman of the University Management Board
(d) Chairman of other Committees as specified in the University Statutes.
(vii) Shall have such powers and duties as may be conferred by the Council in accordance with the University Charter and Statutes.
(viii) May
assign or delegate any of his/her duties to a committee or a member of
the University Staff and may withdraw any such assignment or delegation
at any time.
Tenure of Office:
As
per the Universities Act 2012, Egerton University Charter and Statutes;
the Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a duration of five (5) years
with the possibility of one time renewal for a further term of five (5)
years subject to a positive appraisal by the Council.

copies of relevant academic and professional certificates, national
identity card or passport, testimonials and other relevant supporting
documents. Scanned copies of these documents must accompany the application.
(ii) Applicants must also submit the following:
a) Clearance from Kenya Revenue Authority.
b) Clearance from Higher Education Loans Board.
c) Clearance from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
d) Clearance from Criminal Investigation Department (Certificate of Good Conduct).
e) Clearance from Credit Reference Bureau.
(iii) Applications
through registered mail should be addressed to the Chairman of Council,

(iv) Applications shall clearly be marked “Application for the Position of Vice-Chancellor” and submitted as follows:
(a) Ten (10) hard copies.
(b) Notify the Chairman through an electronic copy of the application by email to
chairmanofcouncil@egerton.ac.ke
(v) Applications must be submitted on or before 18th August, 2015.
