STUDENTS REPORT TOMORROW AMIDST ANXIETY OVER ACCOMMODATION

Moi University Students are set to reopen tomorrow amidst uncertainty; with the possibility large group likely to miss accommodation within the University premises.

Figures of 3,000 have been floated, a population that the University administrators say will get accommodated on the “outside stage residentials” at their own arrangement.

Earlier on, today the student governing council, through the Editor-In-Chief, Mr. William Dekker hinted to some measures in place to salvage the situation among them, staff being evacuated to give more rooms.

“…in a bid to get more spaces, the University also decided to evacuate staff from the Quarters creating a prospect of another 500 more bed spaces yet to be allocated,” reads one of his posts today on the Student Social Forum. He gave his assurance, stating ongoing efforts of both the SGC and the University administrators in seeking lasting solutions to it.

Over the period, a section of the students set to embark tomorrow have contested the idea of having them return in January instead of April, stating “Accommodation crunch” and “financial constraints” as part of their reasons.

Speaking to the 3rd Eye, the Academics Director, Mr. Gogo Edwin, who sits on the University Timetabling Committee (besides the Chairman and the Sec Gen), stated that the decision was made upon the need to clear existent backlog.

“Since the University will receive one of the biggest influx during the next intake, it was prudent to have those in session to run fast,” he said. “This is the ‘Free Primary Education’ lot that started it right from class one, and Moi University being the second to UoN, according to the Ministry, JAB will be compelled to dispatch a bigger group. That might get the University all filled up” he added.

In the meantime, a good number of the incoming groups are already getting into the compound, while those who have successfully acquired rental rooms at “stage” seeking to settle in advance.
